Smart Tips for Successful Bunkering

Smart Tips for Successful Bunkering

To ensure a successful bunker call, first you need to understand which modes of bunkering are actually available on the island of Grand Bahama. There are several to choose from;

    1. Anchorage area
    2. Offshore while drifting
    3. Borco Berths (while conducting cargo ops)
    4. Freeport Harbor berths

Which bunkering mode best meets your needs? The method you choose for receiving bunkers depends on your vessel’s schedule. If you simply need to refuel so that you can continue on your route, then an offshore bunker call is available for you off port or at the anchorage area. Using this method, you would not have to pay any port, pilotage or towage charges; you would be in and out very quickly.  If you have a load or discharge cargo operation, you may want to consider receiving your bunkers while conducting operations at Borco berth. Other maritime services like crew transfers, vessel spares delivery or inspections can be carried out in a cost effective manner at a Harbor Berth.

In my previous post, I go into the basics of ship bunkering in the Bahamas. I also mentioned that the bunkers on Grand Bahama are supplied by Shell Marine Products. Any grade marine fuel oil can be delivered on demand from 180cst to 500cst, also LSFO and MGO.  As usual, I’d like to share with you some things to keep in mind to make your bunker port call successful.

 Bunker Scheduling

If your vessel is calling solely for bunkering, she will in most cases be receiving the stem via barge. These deliveries are made on a first come first served basis. While alongside the offshore jetties or at Borco’s inner berths deliveries can be made concurrent with the vessel’s cargo operations. If your vessel decides upon receiving bunkers at one of Borco’s inner berths, then take note that the maximum draft limitations are;

  • 28.5Ft at Dock# 1
  • 44FT at Berth # 12.

 Weather

In the summer months during the Atlantic hurricane season which begins in June and ends in November, tropical cyclones can produce inclement marine weather conditions. Although the Bahamas is located in the hurricane belt that lies across most of the Caribbean, many storms bypass the island chain and instead circle below it before heading north toward the United States. Of course, you should monitor the progress of any storms in the area during these periods in conjunction with your vessels bunkering operations.

In the winter months, extending from December through April, the local climate is affected by the movement of cold fronts from North America which causes winds and seas to briefly increase during the passage. Being aware of these weather factors in advance of a vessels arrival can help in planning bunker deliveries.

 Government Clearance

Free practique must be granted by the authorities prior to your vessel receiving its bunker stem.

All local procedures relating to bunkering and oil cargo should follow IMO standards in accordance with the “Manual on Oil Pollution Section 1 – Prevention”

Ship Bunkering in the Bahamas 101

It may come as a surprise to you, but Grand Bahama Island is the only location in the Bahamas where you can obtain bunkers!  Yes I know 700 islands and only 1 location available for bunkering.  This is yet another benefit of carrying out maritime related business on Grand Bahama.  Its strategic location, good infrastructure, port facilities and conveniences make it a ship owner’s haven.  Also, the location along established shipping lanes makes it an easy stop off point for tankers, cruise ships and other vessels.  Apart from this, the nearest location for obtaining bunkers is Florida, USA.

The bunkers on Grand Bahama are supplied by Shell Marine Products. Any grade marine fuel oil can be delivered on demand from 180cst to 500cst, also LSFO and MGO.

3 tips for saving time and money

1. Have the vessel cleared with the authorities just prior to the delivery, this will reduce the customs overtime charges that would be incurred if the vessel was cleared days in advance of the actually delivery.

2. Make sure that your agent efficiently coordinates the port call as keeping all parties well informed about the vessel’s schedule results in a timely delivery.

3. When possible ensure that the vessel arrives as per the advised schedule, if it doesn’t the bunker supplier will move on to other vessel(s) on its schedule before returning to your vessel which can result in some very lengthy delays.

The role of your ships agent during a bunker call

An agent should contact the bunker supplier to confirm that the stem was received in good order. An agent stays in contact with the vessel with regard to its ETA to inform all parties concerned. An agent should also keep the vessel advise of the bunker delivery schedule prior to and once the vessel arrives at the port. Once the bunkering is complete an agent ensures the timely collection, dispatch and tracking of the bunker samples to the designated testing labs.

In my next post, I will talk about some specific modes of bunkering available for your vessel and we will look at which one best suit your operational needs.

Vessel Stores – Are Freight Charges Really Necessary?

Vessel Stores – Are Freight Charges Really Necessary?

In this post I will answer a question that I get very often from ship captains and ship owners.

 Why do I have to pay freight charges when ordering provisions and vessel stores or vessel supplies while in port on Grand Bahama?

This is a popular concern, and to answer the question straightforward, No, you do not have pay those freight charges, however I will show you how paying those charges not only saves you money, but also results in better quality products when you purchase vessel stores.

So, your ship just left Europe and is making a port call to Grand Bahama Island. In Grand Bahama, your ship is probably getting bunkers and doing a crew transfer, and it just so happens that supplies are rationing for your next leg of the journey. So you assume you can save some money by purchasing vessel stores directly on Grand Bahama and simply bundle all the services while in port. It sounds simple right? Well why is your ship agent telling you that you must pay freight charges? Here’s  why…..

Tax Free

In the Bahamas, we have no direct form of taxation; however, our Government charges a customs duty on all items shipped in to the country. This duty ranges  up to 100% of the cost of the item and the cost to ship it.

For Example;

You buy something at a cost of $400 and your shipping cost is $100. Let’s say the customs duty is 35%.

Now you will have to pay an additional 35% on top of what you bought the item for added to the freight costs.

$400(cost of item) + $100 (freight cost) = $500.00 (Landed value of the item) x 35% = $175.00 (Customs duty).
$175.00 + $500.00 = $675.00 (cost of item after payment of customs duties)

What Residents Pay For Provisions

So local merchants on the island are also charged this duty and so the cost of an item includes merchant purchase costs from the mainland, freight costs, duty costs and the markup from the merchant. This can be up to 3-4 times more than the basic cost of the item if purchased from the original seller. These are the costs residents pay;

How Ships can save money

Ships requesting large quantities of food supplies can save a bundle of cash if the products are purchased directly from the original supplier located off of the island. Using this method, you, the customer will only pay the following costs;

Also, keep in mind that perishable food supplies such as fruits and vegetables can become overripe sitting in the local stores. Sometimes there are simply not sufficient amounts of foods available to fulfill the order.

To Sum Up

So in order to get best quality at an affordable price, we import the vessel stores and vessel supplies. Even with freight charges it is much cheaper because we pay no customs duty.

It is important to note that you can obtain almost any vessel supplies you need as long as there is sufficient time to do so. Once you agree to the quote from your ships agency, it takes about 4 days before your supplies can be delivered to your ship.

The convenience of getting the vessel supplies you ordered in good quality, bundled with all the other great maritime services available on Grand Bahama is definitely worth the short wait.
